Boxing Rumors (Maybe Hidden Truths) 4/21/08

1. Roy Jones Jr-Joe Calzaghe on HBOPPV November 15???? That is a rumor but do not be surprised if it becomes reality. After beating Hopkins, Jones is the most marketable highest value fighter out there for Calzaghe to fight.

2. Freddie Roach, who was the head trainer for Bernard Hopkins, said he thinks Hopkins should retire. He said he fought a great fight and should just retire and not push the envelope any further. Time will tell if Hopkins does retire, Don King is trying to get a Hopkins-Felix Trinidad rematch. Trinidad wants this fight more than Hopkins but the money maybe more than Hopkins can refuse.

3. Not sure if many watched or heard but O'Neil Bell quit in his corner after the 7th round Saturday. Tomasz Adamek was keeping the pressure on Bell who seemed like he did not want to be in the ring. Bell was not hurt at the time of the stoppage, he just simply informed his corner he did not want to continue. This could further hurt his career which has been stalled due to his inactivity. For Adamek he becomes the mandatory for IBF Cruiserweight Champion, Steve "USS" Cunningham.

4. Shelly Finkel has filed for arbitration to uphold his rights against Anthony and Lamont Peterson. The Peterson brothers had signed a promotional contract with Top Rank last week, without their co-manger Finkel. Finkel claims the Peterson brothers other manager, Barry Hunter, refused to let him see the contract the Petersons signed. Finkel's contract with the Peterson Brothers does not expire until September 2009. Finkel says he was working on a deal with Golden Boy that was going to offer the Petersons more than double the signing bonus Top Rank was offering. Top Rank was offering signing bonuses to each brother for $100,000.

Thanks for the great infro, I saw the end of the Hopkins fight, I missed the knock down, I son felt Hopkins won, I liked faking on the low blow to rest but at 43, maybe it is time to hang em up

Hopkins needs to retire. It has been time. He should have retired after the Tarver fight. He kept saying he made a promise to him mother to retire before he turned 41. Then when he unexpectantly lost to Jermain Taylor twice, it threw his plan off. So we acted like it was okay for him to fight beyond 41. Then he went back on that word. It is time for him to hang them up. He had a great career. Plus as I have stated multiple times, he only fought 6 rounds a fight anyway and the other 6 the other fighter was giving him a lot of respect. The fights where he needed to fight more than 6 rounds, he lost ex Taylor (twice) and now Calzaghe. Now I think he could still beat Trinidad if he wanted that fight, but I think he should retire now. No need to keep fighting.
