Boxing Rumors (Maybe Hidden Truths) 5/15/08

1. Joan Guzman vacated his WBO Junior Lightweight title. After having visa problems, his fight against Alex Arthur was postponed. Then still no date came about. In the meantime, Guzman found out his mother was developing head tumor. No details when Guzman will return to the ring but when he does it will be as a Lightweight (135lbs). Lets keep Joan Guzman's mother in our prayers.

2. Miguel Cotto has not signed his contract for his July 26 fight against Antonio Margarito. It appears that Cotto wants a larger percentage of the gate and the PPV sales. The fight is not endangered but still the contracts need to be signed.

3. Ricky Hatton's dad, Ray, said Junior Witter blew his chance to fight Ricky by losing this past weekend. Hatton who has avoided Witter like the Ebola virus was said to be willing to fight Witter next year. Now that Witter loss, he blew his chance at a fight with him. Geez how did I know that was going to be said after Witter loss. Had Witter won, Hatton would have been quiet still.

4. The WBC has not officially ranked David Haye in the Heavyweight Division, but say he will definitely be in their top-10. Haye had written the WBC a letter asking them to rank him as a Heavyweight since he was vacating his WBC Cruiserweight title.

5. Early reports are indicating that Roy Jones Jr. is asking for a lot of money to fight Joe Calzaghe. Never beyond Roy to ask for a lot of money, but I guess Calzaghe must have an issue with it or else it would not have come up. So now Calzaghe may try aiming his next fight against Kelly Pavlik. This one could be very interesting.

6. Felix Trinidad who needs to retire for good still wants to fight. Trinidad still has his eyes set on fighting either Bernard Hopkins or Oscar De La Hoya. Hopkins turned the fight down after his loss to Calzaghe. However the issue with De La Hoya is weight. De La Hoya says they could fight but the fight would need to be between 154lbs and 160lbs. Trinidad says he could come down to 165lbs, 160lbs is not possible for him to reach. Money talks, lets see if it screams because if it does someone will cave in on the weight.

7. Elvir Muriqi has hired Buddy McGirt to be his trainer. Muriqi is best known for his very game fight against Antonio Tarver, in a fight Muriqi swears he really won. McGirt used to be Tarver's trainer and I am sure that is why Muriqi set his eyes on him. However the chances of a rematch between Muriqi and Tarver are very slim even though Muriqi thinks he deserves one.

8. Chris Byrd is fighting on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights in his debut at Light Heavyweight. Below is a picture of Byrd looking in tight shape. There is no flab on this body, never know Byrd may have just created the 2nd stage of his career. Byrd says he is stronger and faster at Light Heavyweight and we will see how he looks tomorrow night.

9. Alex Arthur may not have to fight to become the WBO Junior Lightweight Champion. Since Joan Guzman is vacating, the WBO will just remove the term interim from Arthur and make him their Champion.
