Boxing Rumors (Maybe Hidden Truths) 5/26/08

1. Vitali Klitschko has once again lost his bid at being Mayor of Kiev. This round he came in third. Now he can fully focus on trying not to get injured and cancelling yet another fight against Samuel Peter. The fight with Peter is scheduled to take place in October.

2. Oscar De La Hoya has stated he will not pursue a fight with Ricky Hatton. De La Hoya said that Hatton is a 140lb fighter and should not try to fight above that weight. De La Hoya then in my opinion lied when he stated he could make 140 if he tried but would not do so. De La Hoya as quietly as it was kept did not even make the 150 limit he had for his fight with Steve Forbes. If you watch the weigh in, De La Hoya tipped the scale at 150.5lbs. Plus if he could make 147 as easy as he has stated, then why is he fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. at a catchweight of 150lbs. Hmm, makes you wonder.

3. It appears HBO is going to do a Countdown for Cotto-Margarito after all. At first HBO was not, for some unknown crazy reason, going to do a countdown. However due to the fans demand they have reconsidered. Good for HBO. They should not mess up the promotion of one of the best fights of the year by not doing a countdown.

4. Golden Boy Promotions, who promotes Ricky Hatton, is not agreeing with Hatton that he is ready for a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. after the Paulie Malignaggi fight. GoldenBoy believes that after Hatton fights and hopefully beats Malignaggi that he should fight either Manny Pacquiao, Juan Diaz, or Michael Katsidis. Of course each of these fighters would need to win. They are all promoted by Golden Boy so the money would stay in house. Isn't life great, for Golden Boy.

5. Undisputed Cruiserweight Champion David Haye has signed a promotional deal with Golden Boy Promotions. The deal was closed when Golden Boy was in England for the Ricky Hatton fight this past Saturday. Haye is moving up to Heavyweight and has his eyes on Hasim Rahman for his first big test at the division. Rahman is a former two-time Heavyweight Champion who is desperate need for a big win to get back in the picture. The Haye-Rahman fight fell apart due to money issues awhile ago, but hopefully it will get done this time.
