Boxing Rumors (Maybe Hidden Truths) 7/8/08

1. It appears that the Roy Jones Jr.-Joe Calzaghe fight will take place at Madison Square Garden on September 20. Calzaghe wanted the fight in Wales, but HBO insisted the fight take place in the US.

2. Kelly Pavlik has been nominated for an ESPY award from ESPN.

3. The Manny Pacquiao-David Diaz fight has reportedly done horrible in PPVs. It is rumored to have done less than 200,000 PPVs. Ouch. That is really sad because it was the best Pacquiao ever fought. However it leads many to believe that the future PPV cards such as Joel Casamayor-Juan Manuel Marquez on September 13 and the Shane Mosley-Ricardo Mayorga fight on October 11 will both do horrible.

4. Word has it the IBF has ordered an eliminator for the Junior Middleweight mandatory between former IBF Champ Cory Spinks and Joel Julio. If this comes out to be true, Spinks-Julio will take place this fall and they will not get a chance to fight for the title until early 2009. Currently Verno Phillips holds the IBF title after defeating Cory Spinks in March.

5. Golden Boy Promotions has formed an alliance with USA Boxing under which they will collaborate on numerous marketing, media, broadcast and consulting efforts. This is special to Oscar De La Hoya is a 1992 Olympic Gold Medalist and has always expressed his love for Olympic boxing.

6. Hot prospect Devon Alexander has been named the #1 contender at Junior Welterweight by the WBC. Alexander is ready to fight new WBC Champion Timothy Bradley as soon as possible.
