Boxing Rumors (Maybe Hidden Truths) 3/13/08

1. Former WBA Junior Welterweight Vivian Harris has stated he wants a release from his promotional contract with Gary Shaw Productions. Harris has stated Gary Shaw has not returned any of his calls among others that were not stated as of yet. More to come about this matter in the future.

2. Former Heavyweight Champion Hasim Rahman appears to be fighting in either late April or May against Heavyweight contender Derrick Rossy. If Rahman losses this fight he may want to hang up the gloves.

3. #1 IBF Welterweight Joshua Clottey is going to fight Jose Luis Cruz on April 3 in Brooklyn, NY at Aviator Sports at Floyd Bennett Field.

4. Brian Young of Prize Fight Boxing has stated his Light Heavyweight contender DeAndrey Abron will challenge WBO Light Heavyweight Champion Zsolt Erdei in Germany on April 26.

5. Mike Tyson, who despite all of his issues still has a strong fan following and a huge heart, is going to the UK on May 29 to help raise money for various charities. Tyson participated in helping raise money in the UK once before about 2 years ago when he helped raise money for one charity which was for the family of a Yorkshire police woman who was brutally killed in the line of duty. It is great to see Mike Tyson use his name and celebrity for a good cause.

6. Chad Dawson and Glen Johnson both have passed the WBC's 30 day weigh in. Glen Johnson weighed in at 186 which is just 11 pounds over the Light Heavyweight limit. Dawson on the other hand weighed in at 175 which is the Light Heavyweight limit. It is very rare that a fighter is on weight 30 days in advance. This gets me even more excited to see these two fight on April 12 live on Showtime.

7. Joe Mesi, who was supposed to headline the April 4 ESPN2 Friday Night Fight, injured his shoulder and has withdrawn from the fight. Mesi has been advised to rest his shoulder for 3-4 weeks and then have it re-evaluated.

8. This Saturday, March 15, Thompson Boxing Promotions will honor former champion Victor Burgos. For those of you who may not know, Burgos was forced to quit boxing after having brain surgery last year. After his fight with Vic Darchinyan, in which Burgos took quite a beating, Burgos slipped into a coma due to bleeding on the brain. Burgos has recovered but will not box again. Thompson Boxing Promotions will honor Burgos by making a donation to him at a private event at the Doubletree Hotel in Orange County, CA. WBC Super Bantamweight Champion Israel Vasquez is expected to be in attendance. In the main event of the fight card at the event, Burgos's nephew Juan Carlos Burgos will be fighting.

yeah definitely good to hear of Mike doing something good and giving back. Everyone kinda looks at him as a menace.

Yeah he has his ways but like everybody there is some good in him. It really hurts me that taken advantage of like he was because I've always heard he had a great heart.

I am happy that for once Mike Tyson is being mentioned for something outside of his negative past. No he is not perfect but he does have a lot of good in him too. Speak on the good too is what I say.
