Mamby, 60, loses decision!
By Robert Coster
Former world champion Saoul Mamby lost a ten round decision to one Anthony Osbourne last Saturday in the Cayman Islands. Many question whether Mamby, who will turn 61 in June, should be allowed to fight anywhere. Certainly Osbourne (6-25-1) is no ball of fire but, even so, it's interesting to note that the aged Mamby (45-34-6, 19 KOs) turned pro 36 years ago (before Osbourne's birth), won a world title eight years later and there is no doubt that Saoul's "comeback" to ring action will be cited in the Guiness Book of Records. Another notable fact should be mentioned. Mamby, noted for having one of the toughest chins in boxing history, went the ten round distance with a man 29 years his junior -- an admirable feat for the worthy old champion with eleven grandkids -- but still not good for his health.Monday, March 10 2008

For those of you that did not know, Saoul Mamby was trying to fight a few weeks ago in Iowa. I think this is a disgrace and it saddens me this is allowed to happen. Mamby was not allowed to fight in Iowa so he went to the Cayman Islands where they did not care. Iran Barkley ended up fighting on the card in Iowa. Barkley is 47 years old and is said to have vision problems from being a fighter. He supposedly passed all of his medical exams and was allowed to fight. This is why my sport is taking a beating in the mainstream sense. Fighters who are not healthy, too old, or have many other issues are allowed to get licenses to fight. The thing is if they do not pass the medical exams they will go to Indian Reservations where no medical exams are required or like Mamby, fighters will go to other countries or Islands to fight. This is sad. Hell the guy Mamby was fighting probably should not fight with a record of 6-25. This is a disgrace and I am truly saddened by this news. It is situations like this where I truly wish we had a united boxing commission to stop this madness. Something needs to be done!!!!!!!
