Boxing Rumors (Maybe Hidden Truths) 6/1/08

1. David Haye was recently offered about $1.2 million to fight Matt Skelton in November. Frank Warren made the offer to Haye. Haye has laughed and declined the offer. He referred to Skelton as washed-up and had no desire to face him.

2. Hasim Rahman and James Toney have agreed to fight each other on Wednesday July 16. No television deal has been agreed to yet, but it is likely the fight will be on FoxSports as part of the Best Damn Fight Night.

3. Paulie Malignaggi had succesful surgery on his injured right hand. He should be ready to face Ricky Hatton in November as in his plans.

4. Not so bright news for Sugar Shane Mosley. In papers filed in San Francisco, Victor Conte and former Mosley trainer Deryl Hudson have both testified that Shane was fully aware he was taking illegal steroids before his fight with Oscar De La Hoya in 2003. Mosley has testified he unknowingly took performance enhancing drugs, but Conte and Hudson say differently. They claim that not only did Mosley know what he was taking, but they watched him inject himself with the drugs.

5. There is a chance that Jermain Taylor and Jeff Lacy may fight each other at 168 sometime this year. Taylor and Lacy are former Olympic teammates and friends, but both are in need of a huge win. Taylor needs a win after two consecutive losses to Kelly Pavlik and Lacy needs a big win after his loss to Joe Calzaghe and lackluster fights thereafter.

6. Enzo Maccarinelli wants to prove he is still one of the best in the Cruiserweight division by fighting IBF Champion Steve Cunningham. Maccarinelli was last seen getting TKOd in two rounds against David Haye.

Im glad for Paulie Malignaggi as sorry as a show he and hatton put on last outtings I still think there fight could be entertaining.

As for Taylor and Lacy on paper it looks like a great fight in fact I think it will be but I think both are a prime example of mismanagement. They both came a long to fast in my opinion especially Lacy. It is a shame because they both had star potential, that would of been greater than the ones who sunk there ship.

I want Paulie to win just so there will not be a Mayweather-Hatton rematch. Hatton wants Mayweather to fight him at a catchweight like 143 so he would not have to fight at Welterweight. Check this, Mayweather would beat his ass at anyweight. Hatton could never compete with Mayweather on any level of boxing. Plus Ricky lost more in the first fight than I think he realizes now.

Taylor and Lacy would be a good fight I think. As far as them being moved along too fast. Taylor was brought through nicely in my view. I think the fact that Taylor does not love boxing like he should is his #1 issue. It has been documented many times that Taylor only fights because of the money. That is why as soon as he lost the question of retirement came up. He is not trying to break any records or anything. Which is sad because maybe if he loved it he wouldve had that little extra ump to beat Pavlik.

Now Lacy, his problem was his handlers kept pushing him up the ranks with limited boxing skill. He had some power but no real boxing skill. He throws those wide shots and burns so much energy when they do not connect. He has that bodybuilder body which looks great, but that is not the best body for a boxer. Late in the fight the muscles become heavy. At this point the skills he has is all he is going to have. He is too far along for someone to truly teach him real skills. He has so many bad habits that by round 2 of a fight he will be back at the bad habits or wide punches and bad head movement. Calzaghe just picked him apart for the professional amateur I already thought he was.
